WHAT'S NEXT?
Now that you have started attending a course, does the learning stop here?
Of course not, it's just the beginning.
It's not enough that you "know", or that you've "read" or that you've "understood".
You need to PRACTICE.
You have to read aloud, so you can use the elements of your voice & apply the formula you learned last session.
MODULE 5: PRACTICE. PRACTICE. PRACTICE.
SO HOW DO YOU PRACTICE?
- You need to get used to how you sound in a recording.
- Our voices differ from how we hear it, to how others actually hear it.
- Did you like it? Did you not like it?
- Look back at your recordings so far and give yourself some feedback.
- How could you have made it better?
TONGUE TWISTERS
- We have been made to say tongue twisters in school.
- I thought this was just for our teachers to make fun of us.
- But i realized later that this was a good training ground to help you speak better.
WHY SHOULD WE DO TONGUE TWISTERS?
IMPROVES OUR PRONUNCIATION
- Our tongue is challenged with hard-to-pronounce syllables, which you have to enunciate properly and clearly.
- As a Voice Artist, you will encounter different kinds of scripts/ copy, written by all kinds of writers.
- You cannot change what is written in the script, no matter how badly written it is.
- It is part of our job to read the script properly & clearly, no matter what.
TEACHES US PRESENCE OF MIND
- Most tongue twisters would have a different meaning if you don't pronounce it properly.
- That's why you have to really focus in pronouncing every word.
- The same goes with voice acting.
- We use high-quality equipment, from the mic to the speakers, that's why every sound that you make will be picked-up in the recording.
READ SAMPLE SCRIPTS
- If you're a serious voice artist, you should get used to reading sample scripts even if there's no audition or recording.
- For example, in some commercials, a voiceover needs to be calm & subdued while others would need you to be hyper.
- Directors or clients usually give instructions on the "PEG" that they prefer on a given script.
- One good way to practice is to mimic the commercials that you see or hear everyday.
- You can also record yourself reading your script.
- You can then upload your recordings to a site like soundcloud.com
- This is a good way to have your own portfolio that can be accessed over the internet.
- Who knows, you might be discovered for projects soon!
COMMONLY USED MARKS
- SLASH ( / ) This is used to mark the point where you're supposed to stop or pause.
- UNDERLINE (___) This is used to mark words that need to be emphasized.
- COMMA ( , ) Marks a pause in the script. Also used to separate the words that are listed or separate the name of the person you are talking to in a script ("John, come here".)
- ARROW pointing UPwards & DOWNwards Marks the point where you will make the voice tone or pitch higher or lower.
- CIRCLE ( O ) Some encircle the words that need to be emphasized in a script. I encircle words which I am unsure about the pronunciation (i.e. medical terms).
ACTING TECHNIQUES
USING FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND GESTURES
- "MAHAL KITA". There are different way to express that line. It depends on the character, emotion, & situation being called for by the script. How will you say this in the most natural way?
- Using facial expressions can help you release the natural emotion required in expressing your lines.
- Your delivery will vary if you have a happy and a sad face. the same goes if you make a hugging gesture along with it.
- Some aspiring voice artists sometimes just stare at the script in the dubbing booth while recording.
- Because of this, you can notice that the recording lacks emotions or depth of emotion.
- Use your body to make your voice acting more natural and believable, regardless of the kind of script you have.
- Movement. Orchestrates. Vocal. Expression. MOVE.
LEAD IN LINES
- Try to find where the character is coming from (hugot).
- Who are you talking to?
- How do you feel about this person?
- Why are you talking to each other?
- What problem do you need to solve in this conversation?
- I will teach you how to make "lead-in" lines.
- These are lines that you will say, leading to the actual line in the script. example; "Pre", "Alam mo", or short monologue.
- "Tumigil ka, kung hindi masasampal na kita!", What lead-in line can you come-up for this?
HUMAN SOUND EFFECTS
- You need to use these "sound effects" to make you voice acting more believable.
- Some laugh if they see in the script that their character is laughing. They laugh, stop, and then deliver their lines. DO NOT BE LIKE THIS.
EXAMPLES:
- Laugh
- Cry
- Fell Down
- Received a punch
- Surprise
- Burp
- Sigh
RECAP
- Record yourself.
- Use tongue-twisters.
- Read sample scripts.
MODULE 6: ESTABLISH YOUR BRAND & MARKET YOUR TALENT
WHAT'S YOUR BRAND?
What 's the number 2 anti-dandruff shampoo?
Toothpaste - Colgate
Photocopier - Xerox
Branding.
What does branding have to do with voice acting? A LOT! The voice acting industry is huge, so you have to make you mark. We may not be celebrities but our voices can surely help us. You can be the voice of "The subscriber cannot be reached"... or "Resorts World Manila"...
What do you think of the "VoiceMaster" brand? This brand has been recognized in different TV programs, like "Matanglawin", "KJMS" & "Kabuhayang Swak na Swak".
LET'S TALK ABOUT BRANDING
KNOW YOUR VISION.
"Without a vision, people perish." - Proverbs 29:18
- What is your goal as a voice artist?
- What legacy would you like to leave in the industry?
- You should be a FUTURIST.
- All of your actions should lead to a vision and goal.
- This would help you establish your BRAND.
FIND YOUR NICHE
- It would be easier to introduce your brand if you focus on one or two niches, instead of trying to master everything.
CREATE YOUR LOGO
- A logo is a visual representation of your brand. It's easier to establish your brand recognition with a logo.
DEVELOP YOUR SIGNATURE VOICE
- Developing your voice is a long process of studying and practicing.
- Listen to my VO samples and you will hear my distinctive voice.
- It doesn't really matter.
- What's important is that you're doing something to promote yourself.
READY, GET SET, MARKET!
All of these are useless if no one will notice you. Your product is your VOICE and you should market this to gain recognition. It's important that you are RECOGNIZED in the market. "Out of sight, out of mind."
- You can record your demo even from your cellphone.
- You can start by recording your reading of sample scripts.
MARKETING MATERIALS
- You need these to serve as your "souvenir" to people you meet who could possibly need your services later on.
DOCUMENTATION
- It is very important for you to record your activities.
- I have recorded all the radio and TV interviews - History in the making.
